提起王府学校的Jonah老师,校园里没人不知道,一副西方面孔,却是十足十的“中国通”。这位毕业于哈佛大学的“学霸”,不但中文十级“听说读写”不在话下,课堂上也总是别出心裁。

Just mention BRS teacher Jonah, and there are few on campus who don’t know him: a western face, but, indeed, a complete "China hand". He graduated from Harvard University, and Jonah also obtained an amazing proficiency in Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing. His classes are very creative and always different from what you’re expecting…in a good way!

2018年,Jonah老师正式加入王府学校,他在担任高中英文阅读与写作课程老师的同时,还负责教师发展培训工作。他的热情感染着身边每一位同事,作为王府学校众多外教的一员,他的一天是怎样度过的呢?

Jonah joined the BRS community in 2018 and teaches high school English reading and writing, as well as working as a trainer of the school’s professional development program for teachers. His passion for work influences every colleague around him. As just one member of the many foreign teachers working at BRS, Jonah accepted our invitation to photo shoot one day in his life as a BRS teacher.

在高一年级的英文阅读与写作的课堂上,Jonah老师启发同学们去了解世界上重要的发明,并让大家围绕“发明与创新”这项议题展开小组讨论,探究这些世界发明随着时间推移,会拥有怎样的创新与改变。

In one of his English reading and writing classes for Grade 10 students, Jonah inspired students to learn about the world's most important inventions. They held a group discussion about the topic of "invention and innovation", exploring how these world inventions will innovate our world.

Jonah老师作为任课教师的同时,还担任教师培训的工作。王府学校每个月都有大型教师培训,每次主题不同。这是一次以“折纸鹤”为主题的教师培训,目的是培养老师的默契。教学和折纸鹤一样,在分组折纸鹤时,有的老师折得快、有的不会叠、还有的返工重做,Jonah想借此传达在教学实践中,一个人的力量是有限的,扬长避短、形成互助,才能实现提升教学质量的目标。

In addition to teaching students, Jonah also is a trainer for the school’s professional development program for teachers. BRS hosts monthly, schoolwide teacher training sessions, and the themes vary from month to month. The theme for this session was "origami crane", aimed at fostering the spirit of teamwork between teachers. Jonah believes that teamwork is essential at an international school like BRS, where teachers must be able to work effectively with colleagues at different levels towards a commongoal.

这是Jonah老师与我校学术委员会进行的“学生导师项目”的研究。项目内容是由高二学生为高一学生做辅导,帮助低年级同学,探讨有效的学习方法。在活动现场,同学们以仅有的吸管、胶带两样道具,在20分钟内完成搭“高塔”挑战。这不仅普及了关于空间结构的知识点,又锻炼了高低年级学生各取所长、互相帮助的协作力。

Jonah is one of the guides for the “Student Mentor Program”, initiated by the BRS Academic Committee, and Grade 11 students work as mentors to Grade 10 students, helping them to solve problems and to explore effective learning methods together. In one of the activities, students challenge themselves to build a “tall tower” within 20 minutes using only two tools: straws and adhesive tape. This challenge not only reinforces the knowledge of building a physical structure but also reinforces what we know about building the spirit of teamwork regardless of the grade level.

 Jonah老师的用心不仅在课堂上,生活中也时刻关心大家的学习进展,在升学申请的过程中,还会帮助大家写推荐信,并耐心解答同学们的问题和困扰

Discussing problems with students during class break, they solve problems together. So, during the university application season, Jonah also helps students write recommendation letters and answers their questions or concerns.

Jonah’s daughter Amelia attends BRSLS primary school. Just like Jonah, many other families from the BRS community can pick up their children after work and go home together.

We believe a day in the life of Jonah, full of a sense of fulfillment and happiness, is very much like a day in the life of every committed and dedicated BRS teacher. They do an ordinary job, but create opportunities for extraordinary achievements. You see, our teachers’ kind faces and warm smiles are just like guiding lights, illuminating our students’ pathways towards their dreams and their futures.
