我们一般都记得圆周率是3.14159,大家想必也都有挑战过记忆圆周率Π的经历吧?Π作为无理数,在1761年已经被德国科学家兰伯特证明,小数点后可以一直算下去而不会重复!

We remember that the Pi is 3.14159, and maybe everyone has the experience of trying to memorize Π. As an irrational number, Π was proved by the German scientist Lambert in 1761 that it could be counted without any repetition after the decimal point!

那么,到底是什么时候,人们开始庆祝“圆周率日”这个节日的呢?其实,Pi Day起源于麻省理工学院(MIT),MIT提议要将3月14日定为圆周率日。2009年,美国众议院正式通过这一决议。一般来说,大家从3月14日下午1点59分开始庆祝这一伟大的数学盛会。

So, when did people start to celebrate "Pi Day"? Pi Day is originated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At that time, MIT proposed to set March 14th as "Pi Day." In 2009, the US House of Representatives formally passed this resolution. Generally speaking, everyone starts to celebrate this great math event at 1:59 pm on March 14th.

学生展示Students' Presentations

上海美达菲源起美国美达菲Grandy,传承了美国美达菲的各项传统节日,并融入中国本土的特色。在这一数学盛会上,老师和同学们组织和参与了各项创意活动,表达着对STEM学科的热爱,也通过自己独特的方式诠释着各自心中的数学日。

Originated from MacDuffie Granby, Shanghai MacDuffie inherited traditional festivals from the Granby campus. Moreover, it integrates Chinese features into these events. In this grand mathematics event, teachers and students organized and participated in various creative activities, expressing their love for STEM subjects, and interpreting their unique understanding of maths in different ways.

下午,数学日的庆祝活动正式开始。在两位校长和学术协调员David的带领下,同学们纷纷走上舞台,展示自己和所属团队亲手制作的海报,探索着数学日的由来,Π对人们生活的重要影响,展现了自己对STEM学科的兴趣,也对比了中西方对Π的研究历史。有的同学还将数学和自己所喜欢的体育运动结合起来,展现了自己独立思考的能力以及丰富的想象力和创造力。

In the afternoon, the celebration of Math Day started. Under the leadership of the two principals and academic coordinator David, the students stood on the stage, showing posters made by themselves and their teams. These posters demonstrated the origin of Math Day, the important impact of Π on people's lives, as well as students' passion for STEM subjects. In addition, students also made a comparison of Π's research history between China and western countries. Some students even combined mathematics with their favorite sports, showing their ability to think independently, rich imagination, and creativity.

STEM俱乐部活动STEM Club Activities

除了同学们的演讲和海报展示之外,STEM俱乐部也举办了精彩纷呈的活动。在两位外教老师的带领下,同学们通过游戏的方式,进行了编程的学习以及机器人制作的比赛。

In addition to the presentation and poster-making activities, the STEM Club also held a series of activities. Led by two foreign teachers, the students actively engaged inconducted programming learning and robot competitions.

通过Pi Day的一系列活动,同学们不仅领略了STEM学科的魅力,更发挥了自己的想象力和创造力。数学日虽然已经结束,但同学们的学习热情丝毫未减。接下来,就让我们共同期待,相约来年的Pi Day!

Through these kinds of activities, students not only experienced the charm of STEM subjects, but also exerted their imagination and creativity. Although the math day has ended, the students' enthusiasm for learning has not diminished at all. Next, let us look forward to gathering together and celebrating Pi Day in the coming year!
