专业概况

The objectives of the music discipline are as follows:

To provide programs of study of the highest quality which enables each student to realize his or her maximum, innate scholarly and creative potential. To inculcate in students in all degree programs an understanding of the broad historical and cultural foundations of the art and science of music, and to encourage them to incorporate into their own lives the knowledge and aesthetic appreciation acquired through this experience. To prepare students for graduate study and for professional careers in music. To make available to the general University student opportunities for academic and creative development through instruction in humanities/general education courses and through participation in ensembles. To offer all members of the University community and citizens of the region and the state of Missouri cultural enrichment through the presentation of solo and ensemble performances of the highest professional caliber.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music (Pre-Certification) combines a liberal arts education in the arts, sciences and humanities with a major in music. Along with the outcomes of a liberal education, music majors develop musicianship skills, performance skills, a broad acquaintance with genres and cultural sources, and the ability to develop and defend musical judgments. It is designed for those who wish to pursue a music major, recognizing that a career in music or in education will require further study. It is the preparatory track for the fifth-year MAE professional teaching degree at Truman.

Upon successful completion of requirements for both the Bachelor of Arts in Music (Pre-Certification) and the Master of Arts in Education (Music Education), students will have developed the range of knowledge, skills, and competencies expected of those holding a professional baccalaureate degree in music education. The MAE program provides Missouri certification in Music (Instrumental PK-12) or Music (Vocal PK-12).
