Overview

We put employability right at the heart of this degree. All our tutors have recent industry experience.

They’ll teach you the essential skills for good writing: control of language, precision, imagination and a deep understanding of the context in which you write.

During the course you’ll dive into creative forms such as fiction, poetry, drama and game narratives. You’ll gain in confidence as you explore the wide range of job options open to professionally trained writers.

Why Study Creative and Professional Writing?

If you love words and want to work with them, this is the course for you. We will help you to develop your own creative practice and distinctive voice, and in addition you will study commercial writing – in newspapers and magazines, broadcast media, and business copywriting. You'll also learn about marketing techniques, so that you can present your best face to employers and the publishing industry.

Sessions are largely workshop based, with presentations and discussions stemming directly from students’ own work. We believe that what makes us truly special is our small, friendly team, meaning we can get to know you as an individual and support you every step of the way through personal tutoring.

Teaching

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical workshops and will typically have between 9 and 12 contact hours per week, as well as the opportunity to meet with module tutors and personal academic tutors for tailored advice outside scheduled seminar time.

Seminars in smaller groups will enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures.
