Building on our institutional reputation for excellence, the new BA (Hons) Architecture programme aims to be one of the UK’s leading destinations for aspiring architects. Lancaster’s world-leading teachers and researchers are tackling some of the most pressing challenges in the built environment. From reducing urban pollution to developing ground-breaking building materials - you will be taught by academics who are at the cutting edge of the profession. Lancaster provides an inspiring environment for studying architecture. The course is based at the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA), an award-winning, sustainably focused building located adjacent to woodland and water. Within LICA, you will have a well-equipped studio, with digital and analogue modelling workshops as well as specialist computing facilities. Our commitment to sustainability is clear throughout the campus - from our student eco-residences to our new Health Innovation Campus; you will find inspiring architecture all around you. The degree is made up of a series of modules, which will cover:• Advanced digital design skills• Advanced building design• Building materials, sustainability and site context• Practice and employabilityYou will be taught mainly in small groups by our team of academic staff who are architecture professionals. A combination of practical sessions in workshops and design studio, field trips, and group work will be supplemented by lectures and seminars. Lancaster places a strong emphasis on providing opportunities to gain the skills, experience and support that will enable you to fulfil your career ambitions, which is why our students are so successful at gaining professional level work after they graduate. While many students on this programme will wish to become an architect, a degree in architecture will also provide a platform to move to related jobs in the field such as urban design, planning, conservation, property developing and other design areas. **Professional accreditation**The BA (Hons) Architecture will be the first stage (Part I) of the three-stage process of professional qualification as an architect in the UK. We are also planning to introduce a Master of Architecture MArch programme, which would form the second stage (Part II). The University is seeking prescription of both courses by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), which we intend to be in place by 2020, to be followed by validation by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). We anticipate that this will be confirmed after an RIBA validation visit during 2022/23, which will be the final year of study for our first cohort of undergraduate students. The third stage of the process of professional qualification is gaining professional experience.
