Management is the study and practice of how to utilize and integrate the knowledge, skills, and talents of individuals for the purpose of achieving superior organizational performance. The management major provides students with a theoretical and practical foundation for effective and responsible leadership in both entrepreneurial and established business enterprises. The Department of Management offers a broad and flexible curriculum based on multiple disciplines that prepare students to develop business goals, strategies, and tactics, and to implement them in well-functioning business organizations.

Through a focus on leadership, the department seeks to prepare students to become responsible business leaders with the potential to achieve both personal and organizational success. The faculty is committed to high-quality teaching and research in management, and is dedicated to creating a supportive student environment for personal development and ethical reflection.

The goal of the Bachelor of Business Administration in Management program is to prepare business professionals to utilize and integrate the knowledge, skills, and talents of individuals for the purpose of creating sustained stakeholder value. To accomplish this goal, the Department of Management provides students with a theoretical and practical foundation for effective and responsible leadership in entrepreneurial ventures, small and large business enterprises, and nonprofit organizations.

Outcomes

At the completion of the program, graduates are expected to:

  • Understand the dynamics of human behavior in the workplace through the study of perception, learning, motivation, leadership, and group behavior.
  • Gain an understanding of team processes and performance in organizations, and develop effective skills and practices creating, monitoring, and improving an ongoing team effort.
  • Understand and apply the management concepts and theories at three levels of analysis – i.e., the individual employee, groups, and the organization itself.
  • Understand the internal structures and operations of business organizations and the relationships between an organization and its external market and economic environment.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills for career success, which reflect effective self-assessment, reflection, communication, and collaboration with others within an organization.
  • Develop organizational goals and managerial skills so as to become more effective and constructive organizational members, leaders, and team builders.
  • Integrate and apply team-based management and negotiation skills at the individual and group levels to solve complex business problems and make sound business decisions.
  • Develop a general management perspective, which incorporates the different functional areas into an overall strategy by taking into account complex and uncertain situations.
  • Demonstrate abilities to analyze strategic problems and opportunities in an integrative manner by continually responding to complex and evolving business environments.
  • Understand principles of interpersonal influence and conflict resolution, and develop an awareness of ethical issues in the workplace and organizational social responsibility.
  • Demonstrate abilities to think and articulate critically about ethical considerations pertinent to the function of management both internal and external to the firm.
