The MA in Sociology invites you to think systematically about the social world and how it is changing.

Overview

The programme provides a comprehensive overview of the foundational concerns and current debates in sociology, and offers a range of options for exploring applications in specific areas of research. You learn about current theoretical tools and develop skills in research and data analysis, which can be used in a range of professional fields. The programme is also an excellent basis for pursuing further research in sociology or more specialised or applied subjects.

Teaching and assessment

Assessment is by coursework and the dissertation.

Programme aims

This programme aims to:

• provide you with an advanced overview of debates in the history of sociology and contemporary sociological research
• extend your already-existing knowledge of major approaches within the academic study of sociology
• develop your skills in research design and data collection
• familiarise you with using secondary and qualitative data
• enable you to apply theories and methods of sociology in exploring specialist areas such as the environment, political change, urban development and feminism.

Recent graduates have worked for Government, NGOs, charities and think tanks as well as global media organisations.

为来自中国的学生设计 For entry to a Kent postgraduate degree programme (Master’s), Chinese students typically need to have completed a Bachelor Degree (Xueshi) at a recognised institution. Exact requirements will depend on the postgraduate degree you are applying for and the undergraduate degree you have studied. For programmes that require a 2:1 we usually ask for a Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 70%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions you will need to achieve a final grade of 75%. For programmes that require a 2:2 we usually ask for a Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 65%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions you will need to achieve a final grade of 70%. Applicants with relevant work experience may be considered with lower grades. Some, but not all, postgraduate programmes require your undergraduate degree to have a related major. Some postgraduate programmes may require work experience in a relevant field or at a certain level. For MBA, Students who wish to apply for a higher degree should have a good honours degree from the UK (minimum 2:2) or equivalent internationally recognised qualification. Exceptions will be considered for senior managers with more than ten years’ managerial work experience. Students need to have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.0 in R&W; 5.5 in S&L).
