Postgraduate programmes in journalism at Kent offer you the opportunity to research and learn in an environment that combines excellence in the practice of convergent, multimedia journalism with intellectual leadership in the history, ethics and future of the news industry.

Overview

The MA Multimedia Journalism sets graduates from a wide range of backgrounds on to a career path in the news industry. You learn to report for newspapers, websites, radio and television to a professional standard, while completing the National Council for the Training of Journalists' (NCTJ) Diploma in Journalism. Study at the only UK university which is co-located with a professional TV station, with opportunities for paid internships and invaluable work experience.

About the Centre for Journalism

The Centre for Journalism leads the way for employability in the news industry. You learn to report for newspapers, websites, radio and television using state-of-the-art technology.

The programme assumes no previous training in journalism. It is designed to convert knowledge gained through undergraduate studies in humanities, sciences and social sciences into a journalistic specialism. Your tutors are award-winning journalists with experience in local, national and international news and leading academics in law and politics.

Teaching and assessment

The degree is taught by a combination of lectures, seminars, masterclasses, news days, tutorials and editorial conferences. Assessment is by coursework (including essays, reporting exercises and presentations) and examinations.

Programme aims

This programme aims to:

• teach the professional and academic skills required to practise multimedia journalism to those wishing to pursue a career in the news industry
• educate you to think critically about the ethics, duties and responsibilities of journalism in democratic societies and in emerging democracies and thus improve the quality of journalism as a profession

Careers

This degree will prepare students for employment in broadcast, print and online media as well as enabling them to take advantage of the new opportunities the awareness of media power has created within campaign and pressure groups, online information providers and businesses.

为来自中国的学生设计 For entry to a Kent postgraduate degree programme (Master’s), Chinese students typically need to have completed a Bachelor Degree (Xueshi) at a recognised institution. Exact requirements will depend on the postgraduate degree you are applying for and the undergraduate degree you have studied. For programmes that require a 2:1 we usually ask for a Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 70%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions you will need to achieve a final grade of 75%. For programmes that require a 2:2 we usually ask for a Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 65%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions you will need to achieve a final grade of 70%. Applicants with relevant work experience may be considered with lower grades. Some, but not all, postgraduate programmes require your undergraduate degree to have a related major. Some postgraduate programmes may require work experience in a relevant field or at a certain level. For MBA, Students who wish to apply for a higher degree should have a good honours degree from the UK (minimum 2:2) or equivalent internationally recognised qualification. Exceptions will be considered for senior managers with more than ten years’ managerial work experience. Students need to have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.0 in R&W; 5.5 in S&L).
