二、英语中心推荐读物书单 Books for Teenagers

Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter series is written by J. K. Rowling. The story captivates reader from the very first page. Harry potter is raised in a family which least wants to own him-his aunt and uncle- when he turns 10 he suddenly knew that he is wizard like his parents and has to attend a school of witchcraft and wizardry. He stayed in the school for 6 years during this time he learnt a lot and experienced an all together different life than he was living before. In the seventh year he quit school to take revenge from the dark lord who killed his parents and many other innocent people. In this quest his two dear friends, Ron and Hermione accompany him.

This is an extraordinarily different story. There are seven books in the series and each book is as much unique and different as it is related to the previous one. The story got fame because it has a very unique theme and J. K. Rowling has introduced many new words in the novels.

Harry Potter Series has won many awards and each of the book in the series remain as the bestseller of the year. It has also been included in the Guinness Book of World Record for the year 2009.

Alchemist:

Paulo Coelho is the writer of the famous novel Alchemist. Paulo Coelho is famous for his ingenious writings. It is a story about finding your dreams. He states in his book that the ultimate purpose of human being's creation is to find God and to find God we have to follow our dreams. This book has been written with the plot of medieval times. A boy named Santiago saw a dream and he thinks that he has power to fulfill his dream. In the quest to follow it he started a journey in the desert and in his way he meets many people and learns a lot. The main philosophy of the novel is that when you really want to achieve something the whole universe acts to make your wish come true. The whole novel is full of lines that you want to read again and again. Alchemist is a masterpiece written by Paulo Coelho. He wrote many other books but none else could reach the height as of Alchemist.

To kill a Mockingbird:

To kill a Mockingbird was written and published in 1960. A time when there was great prejudice for the blacks living in the south. There are many themes in the book and is great to read especially fro teenagers. Harper Lee basically told about two themes in the story, i-e; justice and prejudice.

To Kill a Mockingbird is best book for the the pre-teens and teenagers because it revolves around a young girl scout and his brother and the experiences they went through before coming-of-age. The way they saw the world and how their perceptions formed about it.

Sherlock Holmes:

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote different detective stories with the main character of Sherlock Holmes. Some of these stories are short and other are long. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a person with unique ideas. In each of his stories he talked about a case and the way he solved it was only his imagination. Nobody could guess how the case will solve but he turned the case entirely into something different.

The Da Vinci Code:

Dan Brown wrote The Da Vinci Code and many other mystery-detective novels. He is one of the most famous contemporary novelists. The Da Vinci Code follows Robert Langdon a symbologist and Sophie Neveu. They both discover a murder that happened in Paris's Louvre Museum. The murder victim is found in Louvre naked and posed like Da Vinci's painting Vitruvian Man. There is also a cryptic message behind his body. Throughout the story both of the characters seek to find the answer to the code found around the body of the victim.

The story also points to the possibility of Jesus Christ marrying Marry Magaldene. The novel gained much speculation from the very start. The novel has also been criticized by the catholic church for its historic inaccuracy.

The Kite Runner:

Khaled Hosseini is a contemporary writer and he wrote The Kite Runner. The novel has been written in the backdrop of the Soviet Invasion in Afghanistan and the end of Monarchy. Amir is a young boy who befriends Hasan, the son of his father's servant. Hasan is a loyal friend and he always helps and supports Amir. On the other hand Amir at times feels jealous of Hasan because Amirs father find Hasan more manly than Amir himself. Although Hasan always stand in front of Amir in any difficulty but Amir did not do so and on one day when Amir wins kite running competition, Hasan runs to catch the cut kite for him. In the way he was cornered by an elder boy Aseef who is a sociopath. Aseef wanted to take revenge from Hasan and Amir for some previous enemity and raped Hasan. Amir listened Aseef voice but did not respond or help his friend and as a result he lives his life with a guilt.

This is a story of love, respect, friendship, guilt, and redemption. The reader will find all colors of life in this novel and it is very close to reality.

Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl:

Anne Frank was a young girl who lived in Germany. During World War II the family of Anne Frank went into hiding in the attic of his father's office. During this time Anne Frank wrote a diary about the happenings. Anne Frank died of typhus in a concentration camp after they were arrested from their hiding place. After his death his father published the diary. The diary got fame because of the natural and most realistic way in which everything was written.

The Scarlet Letter:

The Scarlet Letter is written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was first published in 1850. A woman whose husband is not present gets pregnant. She is thought to be an adulteress by many but she does not disclose the name of the father. She wears a scarlet "A" upon her clothes, branding her. The novel is a classic and has been read many times.

Pride & Prejudice:

Pride & Prejudice is written by Jane Austen. It was published in 1813. Elizabeth Bennett is the main character of the story who is intelligent, sharp, witty and has good sense of humor but she is not good in judging people in the first impression. Mr. Darcy is a rich man who is very distant with strangers and is often thought to have lot of pride but in reality he is a person of noble thoughts.

The novel is an English classic and it has been considered one of the finest novel in the English literature. It has been read and re-read many times. Thus far 20 million copies of Pride & Prejudice have been sold.

Twilight Saga:

Twilight Saga is a series of books very popular among youth. Stephenie Mayer is the writer of Twilight Saga. Twilight series is a fantasy novel based on a vampire. It surrounds around a girl Isabella Swan who got in love with a boy Edward Cullin who is 104 years old and is a vampire. Due to the popularity the three of the books in the series have been made into motion-films. The series has won many awards and is best-seller too.
