专业概况

在这里学什么？

Will the universe expand forever? Is there life on other planets? How do stars form, live, and die? These are some of the exciting questions confronting astronomers in the twenty-first century. Because of the awe-inspiring immensity of the subject, the study of astronomy has a strong fascination—poetic, philosophical, speculative—for many individuals. In the modern observatory, however, the urge to understand and discover what is happening in the universe finds expression in the scientific pursuit of the subject. To explore the dynamics of colliding galaxies and of interstellar gas in galaxies, to find the compositions of chemically peculiar stars and supernovae remnants, to explain radio-galaxy variations and atomic emissions of quasars—some of the active areas in the Michigan Department of Astronomy—requires patience and dedication, together with the curiosity and talent characteristic of all scientists.

The major in Astronomy and Astrophysics is a math- and physics-intensive path with a research component for those planning a graduate degree in the field. It is designed to help students mount competitive applications for external undergraduate research opportunities and the country’s top graduate programs.

Students generally declare an astronomy major during the second semester of their sophomore year, but are advised to meet with the undergraduate advisor soon as they begin considering it. This helps ensure they’re prepared with the right courses and are taking advantage of all the opportunities the department has to offer.

为来自中国的学生设计 Other English Language Requirements: MELAB (plus speaking): 85 range with section scores 80+ and 3+ in speaking; TOEFL (PBT): 600 range with section scores 57+; ECPE: Certificate with all sections at least a C; CAE or CPE: 185 with no less than 180+ in all sections (CEFR C1);PTE Academic: 68 with all sections equally strong.
