The MCDB Master of Science degree is a non-thesis, non-research based degree. However, some Master's students work in laboratories for course credit.

The program consists of 24 hours of course work:

at least 16 hours of MCDB courses at the 400 level or above at least 4 hours in a cognate subject

This program is flexible and serves a variety of career objectives such as teaching in secondary schools, employment in a variety of research-oriented jobs, and preparation for further professional training. The department does not provide funding for Master's students.

Master's Curriculum

MCDB’s Master of Science Program is a flexible pathway that can be customized for the next stage of a student’s career—medical school, a Ph.D. program, classroom teaching, a research position, or other biology related vocation. Students have access to a diverse and challenging array of courses, seminars, and laboratory research opportunities to prepare for a career in the biological or medical sciences.

Program Requirements

Students must complete 24 credit hours of approved coursework, with a minimum of 16 credit hours coming from MCDB courses. A minimum of four credit hours must come from cognate courses, defined as courses offered by departments other than MCDB. For courses to count toward your required 24 hours, they must be at the 400 level or higher. Up to six credit hours of the required 24 can take the form of independent research (MCDB 700).

Master’s students who lack required prerequisite courses below the 400 level may take these courses during their first two terms of enrollment, but credit from these classes will not count toward the required 24 credit hours. Students who lack prerequisites or are aware of curricular deficiencies are encouraged to address these issues as early as possible.

为来自中国的学生设计 Applicants must complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or Complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned. Other English Language Requirements: Paper/Pencil TOEFL & TWE score of 560; MELAB score of 80.
