Gain an education in advanced economic and finance theory, with relevant econometric and quantitative methods. Building a bridge between the core economic areas of the financial sector, such as financial architecture, regulation and intermediation, and a classical finance curriculum, this programme provides you with enhanced versatility in the global job market.

Overview

All of our MSc degrees equip you with a range of quantitative and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex economic concepts in a clear and concise style. Our programmes not only offer a stimulating education in economic theory but also develop your ability to apply economic knowledge, analytical tools and skills to a range of national and international problems in the areas of finance, development, agriculture and the environment.

Teaching and assessment

Assessment is through a wide variety of methods including seminar presentations, extended essays, short projects, in-class tests, examinations, and the dissertation.

Programme aims

The programme aims to:

• provide a stimulating education in the principles of Financial Economics and their application, in which high quality teaching motivates students to achieve their full potential. The teaching is informed by the research and scholarship of teaching staff.
• build on the existing knowledge, abilities and skills of all students, and to develop a deeper understanding of economic theory in its relation to finance, econometric and quantitative techniques and policy applications to specific areas.
• provide options to enable students to study selected areas of Financial Economics in depth.
• develop in students the ability to apply economic knowledge, analytical tools and skills in a range of theoretical, applied and policy problems.
• develop the skills necessary for independent research and to prepare students for work as professional economists in the area related to Financial Economics.
• provide information and advice on future employment and further postgraduate study.

Careers

A postgraduate degree in the area of economics is a particularly valuable and flexible qualification that can open the door to exciting careers in many professions. Our graduates have gone on to work as economists in international organisations, the financial sector, business, UK and overseas governments, and to further postgraduate training and academic careers at Kent, UK and overseas universities. Recent MSc graduates have gone on to work for companies in the UK such as BNP Paribas, AXA, FactSet and PwC.

为来自中国的学生设计 For entry to a Kent postgraduate degree programme (Master’s), Chinese students typically need to have completed a Bachelor Degree (Xueshi) at a recognised institution. Exact requirements will depend on the postgraduate degree you are applying for and the undergraduate degree you have studied. For programmes that require a 2:1 we usually ask for a Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 70%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions you will need to achieve a final grade of 75%. For programmes that require a 2:2 we usually ask for a Bachelor degree (Xueshi) from a 211 university with a final grade of 65%. For Bachelor degrees from other recognised institutions you will need to achieve a final grade of 70%. Applicants with relevant work experience may be considered with lower grades. Some, but not all, postgraduate programmes require your undergraduate degree to have a related major. Some postgraduate programmes may require work experience in a relevant field or at a certain level. For MBA, Students who wish to apply for a higher degree should have a good honours degree from the UK (minimum 2:2) or equivalent internationally recognised qualification. Exceptions will be considered for senior managers with more than ten years’ managerial work experience. Students need to have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.0 in R&W; 5.5 in S&L).
