The goal of physical education is to improve students' physical fitness, as well as to shape a healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude. Ben Keegan, the physical education program director of HDSH, has been a passionate sports enthusiast since childhood, has more than 10 years of experience teaching and has in-depth knowledge and research in the physical fitness field. We believe that under his leadership, the future of physical education at HD will be more fruitful.

The physiological benefits of exercise have long been acknowledged. More recent discussion in this area centres on why it is important for children to maintain a level of fitness.

锻炼对身体的益处一直被广泛承认,最近的讨论更多集中在为什么孩子也应保持一定的体能水平。

To begin, it is important to understand what is meant by the broad term of fitness. Fitness can be encapsulated as being able to meet the demands of your environment and daily routines whilst maintaining a high level of physical and mental health. However, the term itself can still confuse people who may wonder “What does this really mean?” or “How could I improve my fitness?”

首先,了解广义上的“体能”含义很重要。“体能”可以被概括为:在应对外在环境和日常**的需求外,同时还能保持高水平的身心健康状态。然而,这个词汇本身很容易让人感到困惑:“体能到底指的是什么?”“我该如何提高我的体能?”

Is fitness simply being able to run for ten kilometres without stopping or performing a series of successful basketball free throws? Another way of thinking about this would be to question whether we summarise a child’s mathematical capability by solely assessing them in terms of addition and subtraction? Of course we would not; we would look at a much broader scope of the child’s work. Therefore, best practice in physical education is to do the same in terms of children’s fitness.

体能是不是就是指一个人能做到一口气跑10km或者一次性成功完成一组罚球?换个方式来思考这个问题,我们是否会仅仅通过加减法来评估孩子的数学能力?当然不会!因为我们肯定会研究孩子更多的**成果。所以,在体育教学方面也是如此,广泛的体能训练是比较不错实践。

What is fitness?什么是体能?

In order to appreciate the broader sense of fitness let us first begin by identifying the components of fitness in terms of both health and skill.

为了更好地理解体能的概念,让我们先来看看体能的两个方面:健康相关体能和运动相关体能。

Whilst individuals can debate which component is more beneficial for their chosen environment or demands, it is clear that we must ensure our children understand these terms and more importantly how they can proactively develop fitness awareness as they grow, leading to sustained good habits of physical movement in their adult lives.

虽然每个人所处的环境和需求不同,对于哪个方面更有利并不会达成一致,但可以明确的是我们应确保我们的孩子理解这些专业词汇和概念,并且更重要的是在他们的成长过程中培养发展体能的自主意识,从而在成年后的生活中持续保持良好的体育锻炼习惯。

A background story 背景故事

As a young boy, boxing was my chosen sport. I would train in the boxing gymnasium four times per week focusing on muscular endurance of the shoulder muscles, power in my punches and reaction time in order to evade and execute punches. During evenings when our gymnasium was closed, I would run for ten kilometers ensuring my aerobic endurance was sufficient enough to meet the demands my opponent would bring during competitions. Between the ages of twelve to fifteen I thought I could take on the world! However, reflecting on this experience, I have come to realise that, as qualified as my coaches were in terms of boxing, they did not understand the importance of the above terms and thus nor did I.

小时候,我选择了拳击运动。每周,我都会在拳击馆训练四次,重点训练肩部肌肉的耐力、出拳的力量和反应时间,以便更好地躲避和出击。晚上,当我们的拳击馆关闭后,我会跑上十公里,以确保我的有氧耐力足以满足比赛的需要。在我十二岁到十五岁那段时间,我甚至以为我可以挑战世界! 然而,回顾这段经历,我意识到尽管我的教练拳击打得很好,但他们并不理解体能的重要性,*括我自己。

As I learned more about the science of physical fitness, I began to understand that, in order to achieve all-round fitness, I should have dedicated more time to developing some additional components such as:

· speed through more anerobic training as opposed to aerobic training, or

· flexibility through effective cooling down periods and other activities such as yoga training.

随着我对体能科学的深入了解,我开始明白,为了实现全面的体能提升,我应投入更多的时间去发展一些额外的内容,比如:

- 通过更多的无氧训练而不是有氧训练来提升速度;

- 通过有效的冷却期和其他活动(如瑜伽训练)来提高灵敏度。

Components of fitness 体能的构成要素

Let us look at the components of fitness again and identify some specific ways in which we can develop all aspects of fitness in its broadest sense. The following tables explain the components of fitness in a context which transcends the traditional, one-dimensional notion of fitness.

让我们再来看看体能的组成部分,并找出一些具体的方法,来全面提升我们的体能。下表将突破以往一维的概念来解释体能的组成部分。

In today’s technological world, awareness of fitness and wellbeing has never been as important as it is now. It is important that we help our children to understand what fitness really means, and how to achieve it, either through games, general activity and movement, or through competitive sport. Our students participate in many of these activities at our school, as we know it is important for overall health and wellbeing that they have opportunities to be active every day. It is also important that young people become familiar with these concepts as early as possible, in order to achieve holistic fitness and establish good life habits. As adults, we can model good practices for our children by understanding fitness, or by taking up a sport ourselves.

在如今这个科技发达的时代,从未像现在一样如此重视健康与幸福感。我们试图帮我们的孩子了解体能的真正含义,以及如何通过游戏、活动和运动,或通过竞技体育来实现体能提升。赫德的学生在校内参加了很多这样的活动,因为我们知道,**每日的活动量对他们整体的健康和幸福都很重要。并且,年轻人要尽早熟悉这些概念,以达到全面健身和建立良好生活习惯的目的。作为成年人,我们可以通过了解体能,或者自身从事一项运动,为孩子树立良好的榜样。

Fitness need not be a scary idea. In fact, it is like a jigsaw puzzle in which all the pieces must fit together in order for us to see the big picture. Our bodies are our vessels, the place in which we live, and I hope our children can begin to understand and appreciate how important it is to develop and maintain optimum fitness.

体能其实也没那么可怕。它就像一幅拼图,所有的碎片必须拼在一起,我们才能看到全局。我们的身体就是我们的容器,是我们生活的地方,我希望我们的孩子能够开始理解和体会到发展和保持比较不错体能是多么的重要。
