The first week of February, members of Montverde Academy Shanghai’s senior management team—Mr.Chen (Principal), Ms. Liu (Vice-Principal), and Mr. Moses (Academic Dean)—spent five days visiting the Academy’s Florida campus. It was an exceptionally productive week, and provided many opportunities for deepening and expanding connections. It also provided an extensive opportunity to see the full life of the school, from a training session for new faculty to Senior Speeches as part of a full Upper School morning assembly.

Together, we met with senior administrators responsible for every area of the school. We discussed our expanding curriculum and the coordination of graduation requirements with Mr. Troy Urquhart, Dean of the Upper School. Withthe College Admissions staff, we developed opportunities for sharing resources that will give our students advantages when they’re applying to colleges anduniversities in the U.S.

We had a numberof thoughtful exchanges with Mr. Jerry Matos, the Dean of Students, which covered everything from basic rules and regulations to the policies and practices in place to promote the Academy’s core values of Knowledge,Character, and Community.

After weeks of planning and coordination, we were also able to meet with the Media and Publications staff responsible for producing the school’s Yearbook, which will feature sixteen pages about the Shanghai Campus, including photographs of allstudents, faculty and staff. The layout is almost complete, and it looks fantastic!

We spent a great deal of time with Mr. Ian Smith, Director of InternationalStudents and the school’s ESL program. We discussed the progress we’ve made inShanghai, and shared strategies for helping students develop their English skills as quickly as possible. We also spoke about integrating more technologyinto our programs, including our expanded use of Scientific Learning.

With Mr. Jack Sweeney, Dean of Admission, we continued to coordinate our studentenrollment and streamline the process of sharing data between campuses. We also discussed the possibility of further student exchanges, and the admissions process for transferring between campuses.

Mr.Dennis Woodward, Director of Technology, also lent his skills, perspectives and advice about managing our school’s electronic resources, particularly as wecontinue to expand. We strategized how we can offer all of our students Montverde email addresses, and link online resources to make them available inChina.

Looking forward to Summer School on both the Florida and Shanghai campuses, we planned with Ms. Sue Tortora, who directs the program at Montverde. From the smallest details to the broadest conceptual and curricular possibilities, we outlinedplans for making our third year all the stronger. We will shortly begin sharingmore information and managing student enrollment.

Lastly,we had a wide-ranging and extremely positive meeting with Headmaster Dr. KaseyKesselring. He continues to lend support for every aspect of the Shanghaicampus’s development, and has been very impressed with the quality we’veoffered and our successful growth. We began outlining plans for the Academy tosend a number of new teachers for the upcoming year, and how we’ll celebratethe school’s first graduating class-indeed, we’ll be joined by Mr. Urquhart,and Dr. Kesselring is very much looking forward to visiting again this fall.

To make the entire visit all the more enjoyable, we were able to connect withall of students from the Shanghai campus who have now enrolled in Florida.They’re all fantastically successful, and have made a smooth transition inevery way. Indeed, they’re amongst the highest achieving students in theirclasses and grades, and everyone we met with spoke glowingly of them. In manyways, this was the best confirmation of our accomplishments: seeing ourstudents flourish and on a path toward tremendous future success.
