Arguments Explode激烈的辩论
Story by Zhuang Yi, MVA Shanghai 12th grade student On Monday, MVA Shanghai held a debate competition. The two teams considered the question of whether countries should keep nuclear weapons, or if they should be eliminated. The debate followed the January 6th test by North Korea of a nuclear bomb.
周一的时候,上海美国梦沃课程中心举办了辩论赛。辩论的主题是: 国家是否应该持有核武器。这个主题是因1月6日朝鲜核弹测试。
Each team had 5 people. The team that argued to keep nuclear weapons included Paul, Ken, Amy, Lillian and Amanda. The team that argued that all nuclear weapons should be destroyed included Ada, Darrah, Benjamin, Isabellae and Tom.
每个队有五个人。支持国家应该持有核武器的队有Paul (Yifan Ding), Ken (Kai
Hu), Amy (Yunzhi Shao), Lillian (Duaner Li) 和Amanda (Qianqian Du)。支持国家不应持有核武器的队有Ada (Xinyijia Shu), Darrah (Yijia Zhang), Benjamin (Yuhang Qian), Isabellae (Tianyu Zhang) 和Tom (Yao Xiao)。
At first, each team made an opening statement and everyone presented their positions and their reasons. The anti-weapon team held that all countries should call for the destruction of all nuclear weapons because of their destructive power, and the fact that if used the damage cannot be easily undone. The destruction, both mental and physical, for the victims, is permanent.
一开始,每个队陈述他们开场白,他们的观点以及理由。反核武器队表示,所有国家应该呼吁摧毁核武器,因为核武器具有摧毁力量,并且如果一旦使用核武器,它造成的伤害是无法被挽回的。核武器对遇害者无论是精神上还是肉体上的伤害都是永久的。
The opposing team’s position was that approved countries should be allowed to have nuclear weapons. They defined two kinds of nuclear weapons, tactical and strategic. They then pointed out that nuclear weapons not only can bring us development in the economy and science, but also can bring us peace through deterrence.
反方观点是支持国家应该被允许持有核武器。他们定义了两种核武器,战术核武器和战略核武器。他们指出,核武器不仅可以给我们带来经济和科学的发展,还可以通过威慑的方式带给我们和平。
The “bonus round” was the most exciting part. Our English teachers and debate moderators, Mr. Chris Moses and Mr. Larry Allen, asked four questions. One of the most interesting questions was from Chris, who asked “How can our safety be assured when the regulatory agencies have had so many repeated failures, and rouge states are able to progress in their tests of weapons?”
最精彩的部分是奖励环节。我们的英语老师以及辩论指导老师,Mr. Chris Moses 和 Mr. Larry Allen 问了四个问题。其中最精彩的问题是来自Chris。他问:“当在有关部门这么多次重复性失败,并且有些不遵守条约以及被孤立的国家能够测试他们的武器的情况下,我们的安全怎么才能被**?”
After the side supporting the possession of weapons for deterrence answered the question, Tom, from the opposing team, asked with great passion: “Do you want your baby to be harmed by the nuclear weapons?!?” This is a hard question, because they could not say yes or no. However, luckily for this team, after pausing for a few seconds, the bell rang.
在支持持有核武器队回答完问题后,Tom,来反对持有核武器方,问了一个非常棒的问题:“你想要你们的孩子收到核武器的伤害么?” 这是一个难回答的问题,因为他们既不能说希望,也不能说不希望。然而,幸运的是,在双方僵持了几秒钟之后,铃响了。
The excitement was not just about wining the debate, but rather about using English fluently, thinking in English and thinking quickly in response to difficult questions. All the students in the audience were very interested and engaged for the whole debate, which lasted just over an hour.
辩论精彩的地方不仅仅是输赢,更是流利的使用英语,用英语想问题并且快速思考如何快速应答困难的问题。所有观摩辩论赛的同学都积极参与整个辩论赛。整场辩论赛时常超过一个小时。
