Before the Christmas holiday, students in A.P. United States History expanded their understanding of utopian movements by designing their own.
The class had just studied many of the groups during the pre-Civil-War era, like the Mormons, Shakers, and other visionaries and idealists, that wished to create communities ordered by newfound religious, moral or economic principles.
Working in pairs, the students had to ask abroad range of questions about their prospective society, focusing on bothbig-picture concerns like their goals and values, as well as moredetail-oriented issues, like admission criteria, size and gender ratios.
"The project really improved my research and brainstorming skills," said Qian Yuhang (Benjamin), who imagined an entrepreneurial incubator as an environment most attractive for contemporary people looking for an ideal world.
In addition to researching and brainstorming, students also had to make posters that advertised their Utopias, and to offer a presentation that subjected them to a tough question-and-answer session.
"It provided me with a great opportunity to think as a leader of a country and to imagine what is essential for a stable society," reflected Wei Jiaman (Carman).
Indeed, having had to respond to queries about everything from their economic models to the structure of their government, from rules about family size to whether and why a person could beexpelled, students fully appreciated the complexity of the task set before them—and of the history they had been studying.
"I understand," Wei adds "why most of the Utopias failed."
