Become a skilled town planner

Have you ever stopped to think how new suburbs are planned, where the next railway station will pop up or how to balance urban growth and the environment? In all these processes, an Urban and Regional Planner has been involved. You can explore town planning with USQ’s Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (Honours).

As the only university in Queensland that offers an online planning qualification, your studies will cover both the Queensland and New South Wales planning legislation and equip you to be an Urban and Regional Planner and designer of the future for cities, transport hubs and industrial infrastructure.

You will develop skills in:

• Community consultation
• Using land and human resources sustainably
• Planning legislation and processes
• Economics
• Transport planning
• Urban design
• Plan making, and
• Project management

Whether you want to study online or on-campus, you will gain practical experience through a number of residential schools at USQ Toowoomba. In addition, you can choose a research project in your fourth year to investigate a specific urban and regional planning area, which also can provide a pathway for further study and research.

Professional accreditation

The Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning (Honours) is provisionally accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia and graduates may seek Planner registration with the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).

If you have recently completed a planning course accredited by PIA, a non-accredited planning degree or a planning-related course, you should join us under our Graduate grade. You can be a Graduate member for 2 years after which PIA will elevate you to the next relevant grade depending on the right pathway for you.

Career outcomes

Graduates will have the skills to work as an Urban and Regional Planner specialising in commercial and retail developments, urban renewal projects, transport planning, regional and residential planning or environmental protection.

You will be able to critically analyse, consolidate, and evaluate information to generate innovative and sustainable solutions to solve complex urban and regional planning problems.

为来自中国的学生设计 Students must have completed Senior High School Certificate with 70% or equivalent. Applications are based on comparisons with Australian Year 12 level examinations. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic only) score of 6.0 (or better) (no component lower than 5.5); TOEFL (paper based) score of 550 (or better) (with a minimum Test of Written English Score of TWE 4.5); TOEFL (electronic or computer based) score of 213 (or better) (with essay rating of at least 4.5); TOEFL (internet based) score of 80 (or better) (with 19 minimum in all bands); Pearson (PTE Academic) score of 50 (or better) (with no communicative score less than 50); Cambridge English: First (FCE)/ B2 First with a score of 169 or above. No less than 162 in each skill.
