The rankings below offer an excellent measure of the top science and engineering programs at U.S. schools. It shows the schools that students attended before entering PhD programs in science and engineering fields. It’s an excellent representation of the preparation students received: the skills, research experience and high-quality teaching necessary for them to advance to the top of their field. These data has been assembled by the National Science Foundation, an independent government agency let by experts in science and engineering.

Though it’s important to note the many excellent liberal arts colleges that offer equally excellent opportunities in math and the sciences. With smaller classes, a greater focus on teaching, and easier opportunities for research, they generate some of the best-qualified and most successful graduates in these fields. Many of them are also far more accessible in terms of admissions rates.
