MVA Growth Story Column focuses on telling the growth stories of excellent MVA students. On our way to grow and improve ourselves, we should learn from others, introspect ourselves and valuedaily accumulation.
Hush!Let's hear the sound of their growth.
Dear teachers and students, I'm Tom Xu from G9.3.It is a great honor for me to share my story with you here and thank you for giving me this opportunity.I love music, so I do my utmost in music class as well as its homework.I keep practicing musical instruments every day, thinking about the tough parts and how to overcome them step by step. Under the requirement of my mom, I started learning how to play the piano when I was five. I was pretty sure that I fell in love with piano when I touched it for the first time, because the sound of the piano touched the deepest part of heart. From that day on, I always got a feeling that music might be my life-long career. In recent years, I realized that, career or not, music would be of great importance in my life.
When I was 11 years old, my mom thought that there were too many people learning how to play piano and the competition to stand out in this regard would be increasingly fierce, so she asked me to transfer to violin. At the beginning, it was my uncle that taught me how to play violin and he initiated me very well by teaching me the right posture. Later, my mom sent for a violin teacher from an American Orchestra to teach me. She played the violin very well with nice melody and graceful posture. Yet she was not very strict with me and she often travelled between China and America, so for most of the time, she could not be there to teach me. Therefore, this spring, my mom sent for a professor from Shanghai Conservatory of Music to teach me. Honesty speaking, she could not play as well as that American teacher, but she did know how to teach. I have learned a lot of techniques from her. Although I have gotten the Grade 8 Certificateof ABRSM, I still need to enhance my basic training.Focusing on the basic training is far more important than spending your time on various sorts ofcompetition. Remember that if you want to travel far on the road of music, youshould devote your time to basic training rather than waste too much time in partaking competitions to win awards.
Whatever it is that we want to learn, we should be dedicated and hardworking. If you want to learn how to play a musical instrument, you should insist in practicing every day. Before your practice, you should also think about the specific practice goals of the day as well as the techniques. Why can so many people around us make great achievements in music? I think the answer is simple, as it is said in the old saying “Success equals 1% of genius and 99% of perspiration.” I must confess that I am not hardworking enough, not only because there is not much time available for me to practice the violin but also because I am a little bit busy. My mom has played a key role in keeping me going on this road. No matter how bad the weather is or how tired she is, she will always be there to accompany me to the violin class, for which I am very grateful. Her persistence and encouragement gives me confidence. My mom is also very passionate and energetic. Influenced by her passion and vigor, I gradually become more hardworking and will not retreat from classes because of an ailment. Now I am trying to change myself to be more diligent in not only practicing theviolin but also in academic work. Let’s work harder together! You will get paid for your diligence. If you are also very interested in music or music theory, you can come to me and we can share the knowledge and experience. Maybe we can also get some inspirations through discussion, right?
