大家好，我是殳昕艺佳Ada，是MVA Shanghai 2016届的毕业生，先就读于美国费城的La Salle University。

Hi everybody, my nameis Ada. I’m a Montverde alumna from 2016, and now I attend La Salle University in Philadelphia.

先介绍一下我的这所大学，虽然不像BU，UCLA在国内这么有名气，但是在费城当地也是一所非常不错的学校。Lasalle相对来说是一所较小的私立大学，*括本科生和研究生在内，学校大约共有六千多人，倡导小班制教学，每个课的人数最多不超过30人;拥有良好的教育系统，大部分的majors和minors，其中我校的商科非常出色;还有完善的设施，图书馆，两个健身房，体育馆，两个餐厅，以及我校配有两辆24小时运行的校车。虽然我校坐落在偏郊区的地方，但是周围都是居民区，所以超市，商店都有而且在步行10分钟的地方有一个地铁站，坐地铁半个小时就能到downtown，City Hall，Chinatown等地方，总的来说还是非常便利的。

Let me first introduce my university— though it is not as well-known in China as schools like BU or UCLA. In Philadelphia, it is considered a very good school. Relatively speaking, La Salle is a small, private university. It has both undergraduate and graduate programs, and the school has approximately 6000 students. The school is a proponent of small class sizes, and there are less than 30 students in each class. The school has a great academic system as well as the majority of majors and minors. Among them, the business studies program is outstanding. There are also excellent facilities, including a library, two gyms, a stadium, and two dining halls. My school is also equipped with two school buses that operate 24-hours a day. Although La Salle is located in a suburban area, it is surrounded by residential areas, so there are supermarkets and shops. What’s more, there is a subway station 10-minute walk away, and in half an hour you can get to the downtown area, City Hall, Chinatown, and other places. All in all, it’s very convenient.

其次，是我对将要进入大学的学生们的一些小建议。

In addition, I’d like to give a little advice to students hoping to go to university.

关于学习，要好好利用学校的老师subject tutor和writing center，这些“老师”一般都是以前学过这些课并拿了A的学生，他们会帮助你掌握一些知识点，纠正一些错误，最关键的一点是，这些tutoring都是免费的!

In regards to studying, you should make good use of the school’s subject tutors and writing center. These “teachers” are usually students who have taken similar classes in the past and received an A, and they can help you gain some knowledge and correct some mistakes; an important thing to remember is that this kind of tutoring is free!

关于交友，我认为只去上课是交不到许多朋友的，因为大家课上都认真听课，下课就赶去另一节课，大家根本没有时间交流。所以，我建议要多参加学校活动，和社团。

In terms of friends, I think that just going to class is not a great way to meet a lot of friends, because everyone is listening intently in class, and going to other classes afterwards—everyone barely has time to chat. So, I suggest that you take part in school activities and clubs.

关于课余生活，到了大学以后，我们一周的课时总数就只有12个小时，**如何管理和分配课余时间非常重要。我就是一个血淋淋的例子，美国大学食堂的食物普遍都是薯条，披萨，汉堡，可乐，还有超高热量的甜食。一学期下来我就胖了15磅，印证了freshman fifteen。所以我建议，要抵住美食的诱惑，少吃高热量食物，多吃蔬菜水果，外加一些运动，过一个美好的大学生活!

In regards to college life, we only have 12 hours per week of class time, so learning how to manage your time is really important. I’m a tragic example. American dining halls typically have foods like French fries, pizza, hamburgers, cola, and high-calorie sweets. In one semester, I gained 15 pounds, and became a classic example of the “freshman fifteen.” So I suggest eating less high-calorie foods, more fruits and vegetables, and exercising, in order to resist temptation and have a great college experience!

在申请大学前一定要做好足够的调查 ，不要盲目的选择， 大到那个大学所处地区的天气 ，大学的规模， 小到大学的宿舍， 餐厅食物质量等等都是值得你考虑的地方， 因为你极有可能在那里度过你四年的时光。

Before applying to college you definitely want to do enough research, you don’t want to choose randomly. The weather in the university’s area, the size of the school, how big or small its dormitories are, the quality of the food in the dining hall, etc. should all be considered when making your decision, since you’ll be spending four years there.

在大学里选课也是非常重要的， 看着course description上写的特别高大上的一般来说都会比较难， 不要“以貌取课”， 一定要充分了解然后再做决定。

Choosing the right classes at college is also very important. Picking from just the course description can be difficult, and you don’t want to “judge a class by its cover.” Be sure to fully understand what you’re signing up for before making a decision.

教授也是决定你是否会喜欢这门课的关键， 有些教授的教学风格也许并不适合你。 记住， 你可以随时退课， 退可并不是件坏事， 比起在最后成绩上有个并不理想的结果 ，还不如退课。 退课也有一定的时间限制， 超过一定时间对你的成绩还是会有影响， 各个学校对那个时间限制的要求有所不同。

The professor is also a key point in figuring out whether or not you will like the class, as some professors’ teaching styles may not be right for you. Remember, you can always drop the class, and that’s not a bad thing; often rather than getting a bad grade, it’s better to withdraw. There is usually a set time within which you can withdraw from the class, and if you withdraw after that time, it will influence your grade. This period for withdrawal is different at every school.

最后， 大学是个充分发挥自我， 学乐兼并的地方。 不要有太大压力， 好好享受这四年的生活， 毕竟四年时间说长夜长， 说短也短， 不要有任何遗憾， 想做什么就大胆的去做吧!

Finally, college is a stage, where one can grow and show oneself—a place of learning and fun. You shouldn’t have too much pressure. You should enjoy these four years of your life. After all, if you think of this time as long, it is long; if you think of it as short, it’s short. Don’t have any regrets, and go after what you want!

在大学中我们没有补考的政策, 除非你身体上出了疾病, 要不然缺考的后果就是零分, 而且即使你考的不理想, 你也没有任何的机会进行补救。(不会有projects 或者voluntary works)

In college there is no policy for making up missed tests unless you are physically ill. The result of a test for which you are absent is zero. In addition, if you did not do that well on the test, you do not have opportunity to improve your grade (through projects or extra-credit work).

大学的课程比高中要难很多。 我建议大家多去去老师的office hours ，不仅可以学到课堂以外的知识同时也可以和教授增进互动提高你的participation score。

College classes are a lot harder than high school ones. I recommend going to the teacher’s office during their office hours—not only can you learn something, you can improve your participation grade.

在大学流传一个saying：新生会至少长15磅少吃油炸食品， 多喝水， 多去健身房。

There’s a saying about college: freshman will gain at least 15 pounds. Try and eat less fried foods, drink a lot of water, and go to the gym.

在大学你会有大把大把空余的时间， 怎么利用这些时间是关键。 如果都用作玩耍， 你不可能会通过考试。

You will have a lot of spare time in college— the key is learning how to manage your time. If all you do is play, you won’t pass your tests.

最后一点， 一定要抱着一个积极的心态去迎接一个新环境。 那里会有很多未知的人或者未知的情况， 调整好心态去迎接挑战， 高高兴兴的去你们的梦校吧!

Finally, be sure to keep a positive outlook towards your new environment. There will be a lot of unfamiliar people and situations, but if you change your attitude to welcome the challenge, you can happily go to your dream school!

UCLA

UCLA是西海岸的名校。作为一所公立大学，UCLA的学生人数非常多，而这一就意味着UCLA有着非常丰富的学术以及**资源，校友也遍布整个美国。我在UCLA的短短一个学期内，就感觉到了UCLA非常优秀的全方位支持。学术上，有非常多的课程可供选择，校园内也有各种各样的学术中心。但是由于人数太多，有时也会造成麻烦。比如选课的时候，就会由于人数问题而导致选不到需要选的课，所以需要我们学生做好打算。

UCLA is an elite school on the West Coast. As a public university, the student population of UCLA is quite large, so the academic resources and employment opportunities are quite plentiful. It also has a large alumni network across the United States. In the short semester that I’ve been at UCLA, I’ve found it to be all around excellent. There are many courses to choose from, and there are a variety of on-campus academic centers. But because the population is too big, you can sometimes run into trouble. For example, during course selection, because there are so many students, you may not get the classes you want, so you need to make a good plan.

到了UCLA，我认为与高中**的区别就是社交。在大学，社交的必要性大大提高。我们需要**如何交新朋友，如何校友，如何与中介谈判，如何与专业人士交谈。而这些能力，很有可能会影响我们以后的学术生涯或者职业生涯。混个脸熟变得格外重要。在这些朋友中，很有可能会在以后的某个时间段成为我们的贵人。所以社交是UCLA中比较重要的能力。而为了提高社交能力，我建议十一年级和十二年级的同学了解大量的美国文化，准备一些可以聊的话题，让自己成为一个有趣的人。另外一方面，尽管学业紧张，也不要放弃自己的兴趣爱好。因为兴趣爱好越多，我们也就越容易与其他人产生共鸣，让社交变得容易。总体来说，我建议高中生们在课外多花时间了解美国，对以后融入美国会有很大的帮助。

In coming to UCLA, I think the biggest difference with high school is the social scene. In college, the social scene is a lot more important. We need to know how to make new friends; how to get in touch with the alumni association; how to mediate and negotiate; how to speak with professionals. These abilities are likely to influence our future academic plans or careers. It becomes important to be familiar with a variety of faces. Among these friends, it’s like one will become someone important in the future. Social networking is very important at UCLA. In order to improve your social skills, I suggest grade 11 and grade 12 students spend some time getting to know the culture of the United States and prepare some topics you feel comfortable talking about. On the other hand, though it’s stressful, you shouldn’t give up on your own interests. If you follow your own interests, you’re more likely to meet people with similar interests, which makes it easier to make friends. In general, I suggest that people spend some time getting to know more about the US, as it will make it a lot easier to integrate in the future.
